RENSSELAER, Ind. – The second annual Jasper County Home & Garden Expo was held on April 10 and 11, 2026, at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. Vendors from across the county attended to showcase their products and services. For the second year in a row, Castongia Tractor was a Gold Sponsor of the event.

Located in the Commercial Building, Castongia Tractor highlighted John Deere lawn mowers and compact tractors, as well as STIHL outdoor power equipment. Their booth also had interactive elements, like a giant Connect Four game and a Spin to Win wheel. Thanks to the team at Brown’s Garden and Floral Shoppe, the Castongia booth also showcased perennial grasses and shrubs.

Entries were collected for a STIHL hedge trimmer drawing, and Marcella Moore was randomly selected as the winner.

The Jasper County Home & Garden Expo is co-hosted by the DeMotte Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Rensselaer Chamber of Commerce.

Equipment Scams are on the Rise: How to Avoid Them

It’s no secret that the economy is a hot topic of conversation across all industries, but in agriculture, historic market lows and record-high input expenses have created the perfect storm for scams. Fraud listings and businesses have popped up on social media and online, and in an already stressed market, it’s important to watch for the signs of fraud. Castongia Tractor has been Helping You Grow since 1939, and our team is here to help your operation thrive and your lawn stand out. We don’t want anyone to fall victim to equipment fraud, so keep reading for tips on avoiding these scams.

1. Be Suspicious

As equipment scams become more common, it’s important to be suspicious of listings. Many fraudulent sellers will steal dealer images to create false listings; some will even go as far as creating a false website that looks legitimate. Listing price will often be shockingly low to draw you in, and some listings may even be sponsored on social platforms like Facebook. You should be wary of third-party listings, especially if it's a company or name you don’t recognize. Plus, if the price is too good to be true, it probably is!

2. Verify the Seller

The easiest way to avoid an equipment scam is to verify the seller. Whether you’re browsing virtual auction houses, dealer inventory, Facebook Marketplace, or other catalogs, you’ll want to verify the seller if you’re interested in a unit. Look up the equipment serial number, do a reverse image search, and research the company or seller’s name. Sometimes, a phone call or email is not enough to verify that the seller has possession of the unit! Be diligent in your verification process to authenticate the listing before you make any decisions. Matching an equipment serial number could potentially save you thousands of dollars.

3. Don’t Wire Funds

Along with being suspicious of online listings and taking careful time to verify the seller, never wire funds without solid proof of purchase! In some instances, a transfer of funds will be necessary, but there should be a lot of communication leading up to that transaction. It should be very clear, and in writing, the expectations of what will happen after the sale. When will you receive the equipment? Is it being delivered, or are you picking it up? What are the taxes and fees? You should know exactly what you’re paying for and how you’re getting your equipment before you even consider sending a payment. Don’t lose out on your hard-earned money!

These three tips might seem simple, but they will go a long way in protecting your money. Indiana Ag & Technology Classes Visit Castongia Tractor

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Job placements in agriculture continue to be a hot topic across the industry, but the Indiana Agriculture & Technology School is preparing students for the workforce by providing hands-on opportunities. Castongia Tractor hosted two Indiana Ag & Tech Classes to share career paths at an equipment dealership and to give advice on job applications and interview preparation.

The day started with a quick tour of the facilities and a presentation about the history of John Deere and Castongia Tractor. The Castongia team introduced the different departments and positions available at the dealership. Once the presentation concluded, the students split into four groups and rotated through service-focused stations in the shop. They played a Parts and Tools Identification game, spent time learning about technology and resources available to Service Technicians, learned about row crop planters, and learned about maintaining and leveling a mower deck.

Service Technicians are in high demand across the agricultural industry, especially as technology and computerization continue to increase. It’s important to share more about these career paths in the equipment industry with high school and intermediate students to spark an interest in the field.

The Indiana Agriculture & Technology School is an Indiana state-wide high school program with satellite campuses across the state. Two classes from the St. Joseph’s College location visited the Castongia Tractor store in Rensselaer.

2026 Vincennes University JD Tech Program Graduation

On March 6, 2026, the Castongia Tractor team celebrated three young men who completed the John Deere Tech Program at Vincennes University. During this two-year program, Austin, Blayne, and Henry earned their Associate's degrees, and also became Level 2 certified John Deere technicians. It’s a unique opportunity that allows students to have classroom experience and experience within our Service Department.

Austin and Henry will be working at our Valparaiso store, and Blayne will be in Fowler. We are excited to have them on our team.

February 2026 marks a decade of service in Lake and Porter Counties for Castongia Tractor. In 2016, A&M Farm Center was acquired by Castongia Tractor, expanding our territory beyond Benton, Newton, and Jasper Counties.

The inclusion of these two additional locations has increased our residential footprint, especially as Crown Point continues to expand. We’ve been able to serve more homeowners in Northwest Indiana and more professional landscape businesses since this expansion, along with our farmers and operators in the area.

Castongia Tractor Preps For 2025 Breast Cancer Bake Sales

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and far too many families in our communities have felt or witnessed the hardships that come with the diagnosis. In fact, several of our own team members have fought the battle themselves or walked alongside family members as they battled. In a month filled with pink bows and difficult reminders, we want to do a small part in fighting for a cure.

Again this year, all five of our locations will host our annual bake sales. During business hours on October 16th and 17th, you can stop at any location for a sweet treat that supports a great cause. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to the Indiana Women in Need Foundation.

Cash and checks will be accepted at the bake sale, and we also have a limited quantity of special edition t-shirts available for purchase. If you’re interested in a t-shirt, please contact the Rensselaer location or message us on Facebook. You can also RSVP for the event while you’re there!

Our First Look at Predictive Ground Speed Automation (PGSA)

Technology advancements continue to amaze everyone in the ag industry, and one of the latest harvest automation features from John Deere quickly made the list of must-have tech. Predictive ground speed automation (PGSA) is a new combine automation technology that slows down and speeds up your machine based on the predicted crop biomass ahead of the combine. How is that possible? Our team got an up-close look at this technology with our 2025 S7 800 demo machine.

How Does It Work?

Leading up to harvest, satellite imagery is collected and will populate to your display when PGSA is activated. Forward-facing cameras detect the crop in front of the combine, so in combination with the camera footage and the collected data, the machine is able to adjust its speed.

Model year 2025 and newer combine harvesters with the Ultimate technology package are manufactured to run at their highest capacity 100% of the time. So, when the machine has completed its learning phase and is calibrated to run PGSA, you will be getting the highest possible efficiency and yield from your machine’s settings. Tips for Reducing the Risk of Combine Harvester Fires

Every year during harvest season, the risk of combine fires seems to increase. Dry conditions, dust, and moving parts tend to be a bad mix for fire risk. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of fire.

Blow Out Your Machine

One of the best ways to reduce the risk of fire is to regularly blow out your combine. As grain moves through the machine, residue can be left behind, and as it builds up and the moving elements heat up, there is potential for sparks. When you do your best to keep that residue blown out of your machine, you lessen the opportunity for sparks to ignite that residue.

Stop and Check Your Machine

We know when you get into the rhythm of harvest, the last thing you want to do is lose that momentum. But when you take the time to stop every few hours and do a once-over on your machine, you allow yourself time to double-check that everything is working as it should. Taking the time to do a few quick walkarounds during the day could save your life, your crop, and your combine.

Monitor Wind and Weather Conditions

Unfortunately, there is no bulletproof way to completely prevent a fire from happening, so it’s important that you stay aware of the weather and wind conditions during harvest. Wind can be a starting factor for ignition as well, so watch where the dust is blowing! You’ll likely already be monitoring the weather, but as you do, think about how it can affect the chances of fire.

Be Prepared

Lastly, make sure your machine is equipped with appropriate safety equipment. You should have access to fire extinguishers in and out of the machine. You should also know where the window breaker is inside the cab. If you notice smoke or flame, immediately stop the combine and exit. If you’re unable or unsure about extinguishing any flames, contact 911 right away.

There is something special about a graduation ceremony. Celebrating milestones and stepping into the unknown is exhilarating for the graduate, their families, and any onlookers lucky enough to be involved. In March, two young men graduated from the Vincennes University John Deere Tech program and joined the Castongia Tractor team full-time.

Over the two-year course, Simon and Bryson attended classes at VU, but within the specialized program, they also rotated between class and their respective Castongia locations. The program allows for hands-on learning in the classroom setting and in a working dealer shop.

RENSSELAER, Ind. – On February 18, 2025, Castongia Tractor will continue its collaboration with neighbor Pipestone Veterinary Services to host their annual blood drive at the American Legion Post 29. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT, donors can give blood that can potentially provide life-saving treatment to area residents.

Previous blood drives have provided upwards of 60 pints of blood to the community.

Castongia Tractor Celebrates 85th Anniversary at Customer Appreciation Cookouts

Celebrating 85 years in business is a huge feat, but without continued support and patronage, it’s a feat we couldn’t conquer. During August, Castongia Tractor celebrated its anniversary by celebrating you at each of our five locations.

Having the opportunity to bring our customers together for a meal is always great, and we showcased the company’s history and present-day staff with two photo towers. These towers were focal points and conversation starters at each event, sparking shared stories and memories.

The menu was your traditional cookout meal: cheeseburgers, hotdogs, chips, and cookies were served. The hamburger was purchased locally, however, bid on at the Jasper County 4-H Fair and processed by Hanford Packing. We served approximately 600 hamburgers during the two-week period of cookouts.

We truly appreciate your business and are so glad so many of you were able to join us for lunch in August. We are excited to continue Helping You Grow.

Students Gain Work Experience at Castongia Tractor

Your first summer job can be a lot of things, but for a handful of students in Northwest Indiana, it was a job at their John Deere dealership, Castongia Tractor. Working at an ag equipment dealership is a great way to get your feet wet in the agricultural industry, whether you’re interested in working on equipment, selling it, learning the parts, or understanding the business side of the daily tasks. We’re grateful to witness the next generation of managers, business owners, salespeople, parts personnel, and technicians get their start here.

Working in the Shop

Most of our summer employees work in the shop, gaining hands-on experience alongside seasoned technicians. They’re often responsible for maintaining the lot, assisting technicians if they need an extra set of hands, and any other shop tasks that come up as they work. This experience introduces them to the workload of an Ag Service Technician or if they’d be interested in fixing lawn equipment or compact construction equipment. It can set them on the path to becoming a certified John Deere technician, whether that’s through a John Deere technician program at a nearby university or through in-house training and experience.

Working in the Parts Warehouse

Another possibility for students is to assist with stocking and organizing parts. Keeping displays filled, putting away parts deliveries, and interacting with customers and coworkers are a few of the responsibilities these students may have. These responsibilities can lead to a path as a parts counter person at a dealership; gaining knowledge of equipment parts, understanding inventory accuracy, and different parts ordering processes.

Working in the Office

There are also office roles, and some students may be more interested in learning more about the business and administrative side of an equipment dealership. While these roles may be less available as full-time positions, it’s a great opportunity for students to explore different administrative options in the ag industry. From customer data management to billing, various tasks can introduce students to different roles.

Castongia Tractor Wins 2024 Jasper County Fair Parade

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Fairgoers gathered at lunchtime on Sunday, July 21, to witness the Jasper County Fair parade. Antique tractors, parade floats, and John Deere® Gators lined the road near the South Entrance in preparation for the route.

The Castongia Tractor team hurried to inflate balloons, tape down signs, and distribute candy to their riders. Four John Deere Gators were decorated for the occasion; one celebrating the 100th year of the fair, one honoring Castongia’s 85th anniversary, another decorated as a Grand Champion steer, and one as a First Place pig.

The route looped through the camping area, by the Fair Office, and past the livestock barns. Streets were lined with 4-Hers and visitors and everyone left with an armful of candy.

On behalf of Castongia Tractor, the announcer read, “Castongia Tractor is proud to celebrate 85 years of Helping You Grow! We wish all 4-Hers the best of luck during the 100-Year Jasper County Fair. We look forward to continuing our long-standing support of your 4-H programs.”

Castongia Tractor Partners With SHoule Inc. for Local Water Management Forum Demo

RENSSELAER, Ind. – The first-ever Land Improvement Contractors of America (LICA) Water Management Forum was held this week at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN. LICA chapters from New York, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana joined the trade show lineup, and members from these chapters and others registered to attend different seminars and workshops.

The forum was a two-day event, Thursday and Friday, with several classes and demonstrations to choose from. Class offerings included topics ranging from water drainage solutions to legislative updates. Outdoor demonstrations were hosted by the City of Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department, SHoule Inc., and others.

Castongia Tractor partnered with SHoule to provide an 8320R tractor to pull their high-speed land leveler. Leading up to the event, the Castongia Tractor Service Department ensured that the tractor was set up and properly connected to the implement.

During the demonstration, contractors in attendance could experience the smooth power of the John Deere tractor pulling the leveler and learn about the GPS guidance that communicates with the equipment to correctly scrape and release soil from the pull-behind leveler. The demo field wasn’t spacious enough to release the full power of the setup, but the SHoule high-speed land leveler can operate at a maximum speed of 16 mph.

Oftentimes the summer heat sneaks up on us, even when we know it’s coming! In Indiana especially, you can go from a nice, mild, sunny day to an absolutely miserable heat. Castongia Tractor is dedicated to Helping You Grow and we want to make sure you and your equipment are safe during the longest days of the year. Keep an Eye on Temperatures

When the weather turns warm, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast and also keep an eye on your engine temperature. Equipment can overheat easily in extreme heat, so you’ll need to keep an eye on the number from the cab. If you’re handling high-horsepower tasks, pay close attention to the overall performance of your tractor or machine, and don’t push it to its limits. You can cause serious damage if you push the engine to the max on a hot day.

You also want to monitor the outdoor temperature for your safety and to stay within the limits of specific tasks. For example, if you’re applying any chemical to your fields, some products will not absorb correctly if the temperature is too high. You may need to adjust your to-do list to meet the correct parameters for the jobs at hand.

Stay Hydrated and Fueled

Although most modern equipment has enclosed operating stations or cabs that are equipped with air conditioning, it is very important to stay hydrated when you’re operating equipment in the heat of summer. Choose water and electrolyte solutions and avoid liquids that are dehydrating, like carbonated beverages.

Hydration is key, but so is your calorie intake. You can burn more calories in the sun, so you need to stay fueled as an operator. However, you don’t want to over-consume anything and cause misery for yourself on a hot day! Eat small portions of light foods throughout the day along with your water and electrolytes, and you’ll feel much better than if you ate a large portion of food and then went to work in the heat. If you can or if you’re not in an enclosed cab, take quick breaks throughout the day to prevent yourself from overheating.

If you are working in a cabbed tractor or machine, you should try to avoid creating a cab that is much cooler than the outdoor temperature; if you have to regularly get in and out of the equipment, you can cause fluctuations in your body temperature by going from the heat of the sun to the air-conditioned cab. Find a comfortable temperature, but don’t stun your body when it’s time to exit the machine!

Utilize Preventative Maintenance

It will be important to monitor your machine’s health during the peak summer season, but you can gear up for the heat by utilizing preventative maintenance well before the temperatures climb. Regular inspections can catch problems early on; it’s recommended that you complete a quick equipment inspection before and after each use.

Pay close attention to filters and intakes, especially as the heat increases. Keeping clean filters will reduce the risk of combustion and clear intakes will improve your overall comfortability as an operator. You’ll also want to monitor the fluid levels of your equipment and keep the tanks topped off. It can be advantageous to check the consistency of your fluids as well since the heat can cause changes.

Weather Underground

This app is growing in popularity and quickly becoming the top choice for growers, custom applicators, and gardeners. It’s caught on quickly because it has localized satellite images, radar, and notifications to help you monitor current and upcoming weather events. The daily forecast also shows the direction and speed of the wind, a particularly helpful feature if you’re applying chemicals or working in the field.

The Weather Channel

A classic, and not just during hotel breakfast, is the Weather Channel. You can enjoy the stories and forecasts directly on your app. You’ll notice advertisements on this one too, but that keeps it free-to-use. This is a great choice for regional weather updates and national weather coverage.

My Radar

Another popular option is My Radar, which primarily focuses on, you guessed it, the radar! The app will update your location every time you open it (when you enable location services on your device) so you can quickly view different radar overlays in your area. The most commonly used radar is the classic overlay, but you can also select wind, heat, temperature, and hi-definition options. Free features are limited in My Radar and if you want to view extended forecasts, you may not enjoy this app as much as other options.

John Deere Operations Center

If you’re working in the field, checking an app on your phone may not always be convenient. However, John Deere has now integrated weather data through the John Deere Operations Center, so on Gen 4 displays and newer, weather information will be generated as you work. This weather information is mostly used for data collection, but it can also be helpful for quick temperature and wind speed checks.

March 19, 2024, is the official start of Spring, but this year, it’s also National Ag Day! People from across the country will be celebrating through events, broadcasts, and social media posts. Although Castongia Tractor celebrates agriculture every day, we want to share a quick list of ways you can get involved this Ag Day.

Events in Washington D.C.

One of the main purposes of National Ag Day is to promote and share the industry; in all sectors and of all sizes. USDA is hosting an event from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. with different speakers, ranging from the Secretary of Agriculture to a panel of students. Then, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be Congressional speakers and remarks from the Ag Day Chair on the Hill. When you register, you can also enjoy lunch!

Events are hosted in D.C. to bring awareness to government officials and the public.

John Deere Unveils Model Year 2025 Equipment at 2024 Commodity Classic

The 2024 Commodity Classic in Houston, TX, proved to be an exciting one for John Deere fans. The company announced its 2025 model year additions for the agricultural sector, officially overtaking the competition in available horsepower. Two Castongia Tractor employees were in attendance to get the first look at the 9RX tractor, S7 Series combine, and See and Spray™ technology on Hagie sprayers.

New 9RX High Horsepower Tractor

In the world of articulated tractors, a new leader has emerged. The 2025 John Deere 9RX High Horsepower models offer the latest in technology and power. The new 18-liter engine meets emissions standards while omitting the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the need for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The exhaust-gas recirculation technology allows this to be an option, resulting in time and cost savings for farmers at this scale.

The largest model clocks in at a whopping 830 horsepower, which is ideal for large acreage and heavy fieldwork. When we move from the engine to the cab, operators will find increased comfortability with 15% more floor space and 20% more right-side visibility.

These beastly machines have an advanced technology package that includes the G5 Display and the StarFire 7500 receiver. Packages can be upgraded to include the G5 Advanced technology with SF-RTK for optimal connectivity and precision capabilities.

New S7 Series Combines

Although the High Horsepower 9RX stole the show for many, John Deere also announced a new lineup of combine harvesters featuring many similarities to the renowned X9, especially when looking at the in-cab design.

The S7 Series is available as an S7 600, 700, 800, or 900 model. The lower-level models boast a 9L engine and the two higher-level models feature a 13.6L engine. The S7 900 has a max 617 horsepower while the S7 600 has max 382 horses.

If you’re a technology enthusiast, you’ll notice that the Ultimate Technology package includes Predictive Ground Speed Automation, which utilizes cab-mounted cameras to detect the upcoming crop volume to adjust the combine’s ground speed before entering those crop areas. This adaptive technology will assist operators with machine adjustments to maintain the highest possible crop yield, feed rates, and overall efficiency.

These two product releases only scratch the surface of what will be available from John Deere in 2025. Castongia Tractor Hosts Hay & Forage Customer Clinic

DEMOTTE, IND. – On February 23, 2024, Castongia Tractor hosted a group of customers at its DeMotte location for the 2024 Hay and Forage Clinic. Attendees had the opportunity to interact with John Deere representatives and get a hands-on look at new self-propelled forage harvester (SPFH) technology. Afternoon attendees focused on balers and mower conditioners.

The day started around 9 a.m. with a PowerPoint presentation sharing the newest updates available on John Deere SPFH equipment. Updates included increased efficiency, spout changes, and John Deere HarvestLab™ technology. Those in attendance were able to directly communicate with the area’s John Deere experts to address questions and concerns.

Once the presentation concluded, participants had a close look at the chopper and could visualize some of the updates and features. Herb Wetli, a Service Technician at the Fowler store, discussed some features and maintenance tips with customers while Pat Claire, a Parts Counter Sales staff member, shared information about parts care and ordering.

The morning session was concluded with lunch, provided by Yesteryear’s Market. At this time, afternoon attendees joined the group. All attendees were entered into a drawing for various prizes, ranging from a Milwaukee grease gun to Castongia Tractor merchandise.

In the afternoon, the topic changed from SPFHs to balers and mower conditioners. Again, attendees learned about available upgrades and changes from John Deere and had the opportunity to ask the representatives questions. The group then moved out to the shop to hear from Castongia Tractor Service Technicians who have years of experience and knowledge working with this equipment. Troy Slavings, from the Valparaiso store, shared tips and tricks for baler maintenance and answered many customer questions.

February is an exciting month in Louisville, KY, as vendors, competitors, and attendees converge on the Expo Center to enjoy the National Farm Machinery Show. Although Castongia Tractor doesn’t attend as a vendor, many of our employees look forward to exploring the show and the latest innovations in the industry. Since so many of us enjoy what the show offers, we’ve compiled a quick list of things to do at the 2024 National Farm Machinery Show!

Trade Show

Possibly the most popular attraction is the trade show floor. You’ll need your walking shoes to pass by all of the booths! You can experience hands-on displays of equipment ranging from mowers to large agricultural implements and shop for your favorite merchandise or look for fun freebies. Whether you’re looking for innovations from brands you love or you want to explore something entirely new to you, you’ll find it throughout the trade show.

John Deere has a booth there with our friends at Wright Implement and it’s always a pleasure to see what displays they have on the show floor. It's a great opportunity to get your hands on many of the latest releases. You can also bring the kids along to enjoy the pedal tractors at their booth!

Seminars

If you need a rest from walking through the expo center, there are several seminars you can attend during the show. The commodity and weather outlook seminar is a daily event and one that many farmers enjoy attending. There are also sessions about farm research, agronomy, biofuels, and topics that highlight current and upcoming industry trends.

Every day there is a new lineup of sessions to enjoy, so whether you’re attending the show for one day or a couple, there will be something new to listen in on. Make sure to check the list and find it on the map so you don't miss out!

Tractor Pull

In the evenings, crowds will gather to watch the Championship Tractor Pull, a major draw for many visitors. Pulling teams across the United States are invited to compete in this event and it’s always thrilling to watch these machines pull the sled. The pull takes place indoors, a special spectacle on its own, with a unique filtration system that reduces the exhaust in the arena. Make sure to bring your earplugs to this event!

If you can't make the live pull but you'd like to have a look at the machines, you can head over to Broadbent Arena throughout the show for a display of trucks and tractors that will be competing on the dirt later in the day. Many times you can meet the pulling team when you walk through, too! They're always excited to share their passion for pulling and to answer any questions you may have about the sport or the machines.

How to Prepare Your Mower for the First Cut of the Year

If you're itching for the first mow of the year, now is probably the time to prepare your mower.

As the weather warms up in the Midwest, homeowners, and businesses, across the state start thinking about dusting off the lawnmower and getting ready to whip their yards into shape. But before you start mowing, it's important to make sure your mower is ready for the season ahead.

Our team of parts and service professionals can help you get your mower ready for a satisfying first mow of the year! Keep reading for a quick list of tasks you can complete at home. We’ll be here to help you get the right parts or get the job done.

1. Check the Oil

Before you start your mower, check the oil level and make sure it's at the recommended level. If the oil is dirty, drain it and replace it with fresh oil. You may have done this at the end of last year’s mowing season, but it’s important to check your oil level and make sure there are no problems with the engine oil in the tank.

2. Check the Air Filter

A dirty air filter can reduce the performance of your mower and cause it to stall. Check the air filter and replace it if it's dirty. If you don’t think the air filter needs to be completely replaced, you may be able to clear away the dust and debris with an air compressor.

3. Inspect the Spark Plug

A worn or dirty spark plug can cause your mower to run poorly or not start at all. Check the spark plug and replace it if it's worn or dirty. Pay close to attention to how it shows wear, as it could indicate other issues.

4. Check the Blades

Inspect the blades for damage or wear. Dull or damaged blades can make your mower work harder and cut unevenly. Sharpen or replace the blades as needed to avoid uneven cuts and lawn damage.

5. Check the Fuel

If you left fuel in your mower over the winter, with or without a stabilizer, it could result in your mower running poorly. If you have any suspicion that the remaining fuel has gone bad, you should drain the old fuel and refill the tank. You may also want to add a stabilizer at this point as well to make the first start a bit simpler.

You may not have to worry about fuel at all if you’re operating an electric mower! John Deere recently released an electric zero-turn mower. So, if you’re using an eclectic model, you can skip to step six.

6. Check the Battery

If your mower has a battery, make sure it's fully charged before you start mowing. If the battery is weak, replace it. Many mower owners will remove the battery over the winter to avoid corrosion and leaks, so if you did remove the battery, make sure to test it before you replace it.

7. Check the Tires

Check the tires for proper inflation and make sure they're not worn or damaged. Uneven tire pressure can cause your mower to cut unevenly. You may have elevated your mower during the off-season or you might have removed the tires altogether. Even then, make sure to check the pressure and quality of the tread.

You could also upgrade your tires and avoid the need to check tire pressure by looking into the tweel turf tire option. We anticipate more and more tweel tires will become available over the coming years, which can reduce your overall maintenance costs, especially in a commercial setting.

Steps for Winterizing Your Precision Technology

Winterizing your large equipment like tractors and sprayers is important, but have you thought about the importance of winterizing the technology that those machines use? Precision agriculture continues to grow and evolve, which means there are more and more components you’ll need to maintain! Castongia Tractor has an incredible team of Integrated Solutions Consultants who can assist you with your technology needs, starting with the appropriate steps to take for winterizing items like displays and receivers.

Upload Data

Before you begin your winterization process, you’ll first want to upload all of your collected data to the John Deere Operations Center or to some type of external storage device. Your precision technology gathers essential data that can be useful for future planning and performance monitoring, but most configurations will require that data be uploaded or backed up.

Power Down

Once you’ve transferred your data, you’ll be ready to power down your technology. The equipment (i.e. tractor, sprayer, combine) will need to be shut off and the precision technology you’re removing will need to be powered off.

Removing Items

After everything has been turned off, you can safely remove the items from the cab. You’ll want to disconnect any cables and harnesses and then you can remove any devices from your mounts. If you’re removing a display from a Command Center arm, you’ll need to remove a set of bolts.

When you remove a receiver, you’ll need to check the indicator light and also make sure the connector is not exposed to the elements.

Cleaning

Dirt and grime can build up over the year, so you may need to wipe down your precision items before they head to storage for the season. It’s best to use a simple wipe or microfiber cloth to remove dust and debris.

Storage

When you’ve removed your items, it’s best to store them in a cool, dry place. You might set them on a shelf for the season or find a secure area in your shop. Just make sure you remember where you’ve stored your items so you’ll be ready to get back to it in the Spring!

History of Castongia Tractor

Farming looked a lot different 85 years ago. Horsepower didn’t refer to the engine under the hood and parts inventory wasn’t tracked with an online system. Although the agriculture and equipment industry looks a lot different now, Castongia Tractor is still here serving communities across Northwest Indiana and Northeastern Illinois.

Filling a Need for Local Equipment and Goods

Archie J. Castongia took over his family’s farm near Beaverville, IL, in 1930, and for several years he continued to farm the land. However, after a few years of farming, he realized there was a serious need for a farm equipment dealership in the area. So, in early 1939, he sold a load of hogs and used the earnings to pay the freight on a shipment of six tractors, and the Castongia’s business took its first steps.

It was a time when farmers were transitioning from animal power to more mechanized farming, so Archie would accept trades of plow horses and livestock teams for equipment sales. The animals he took would often be transported back to the family farm where he could care for them and eventually sell them. Grain was another acceptable trade, and Roger Castongia, Archie’s youngest son, was tasked with hauling and cleaning a corn crib as his first official dealership job!

Throughout the early stages of the business, there were several different categories of products that the team offered. At one point, Castongia Tractor carried John Deere and Case equipment, sold hardware, sold GMC trucks, Frigidaire appliances, and DeLaval milkers. Parts were shipped in burlap sacks and would be spread across the floor for farmers to pick through so they could make their repairs. Archie did all he could to meet the needs of his community!

Family Ownership Leads to Business Growth

Roger Castongia acquired the business in 1967, after serving in the Air Force and joining the dealership team in 1961. Before Roger took over, Archie’s eldest son, Ezra, helped run things until 1966 after serving during WWII.

Roger took on a major expansion project in 1988, moving the Castongia business into Rensselaer and DeMotte, IN, by acquiring dealerships from Bob Butler. Then in 1993, a third store was opened in Fowler, IN, which was previously known as Nally Brothers.

The relocation of Highway 41 changed the market in Morocco, IN, so it made sense for the company to move and expand around that time. The original store isn’t recognizable today, but Castongia Tractor is still proudly serving the Newton County area at its surrounding locations.

In 2000, Roger’s son, Jon, took over the business. A new DeMotte store was constructed and opened in 2005, and in 2016, Castongia Tractor expanded again into the Crown Point and Valparaiso markets.

Today, Castongia Tractor operates five full-service John Deere dealerships in Rensselaer, DeMotte, Fowler, Crown Point, and Valparaiso, IN.
