Common Agricultural Equipment You’ll See at the Dairy Farm

Dairy operations utilize modern technology and agricultural equipment to handle everyday tasks, including animal husbandry, crop production, and infrastructure maintenance. Being in Northwest Indiana, Castongia Tractor is proud to serve several dairy operations, and in this post, we’ll share some of the most common John Deere machinery you’re likely to spot on the farm.

Mid-Size and Compact Utility Tractors

Many everyday tasks, like feeding and watering, require the use of farm equipment to efficiently and safely be completed. Compact and mid-size tractors are great for these types of tasks at the dairy because they’re smaller framed, efficient on fuel, and comfortable for the operator. These tractors are often equipped with front-end loaders, which is ideal for moving materials or scraping. A lot can be accomplished with these tractors!

Tractor Attachments

Although the tractors on their own are handy, they’re even better used when they’re paired with different attachments. Compact and mid-size tractors can be used with a variety of attachments, including:

  • Forks
  • Blades
  • Boom mowers
  • Balers

These attachments allow compact and mid-size tractors to perform crucial tasks for day-to-day operations at the dairy.

Self-Propelled Forest Harvesters (Choppers)

Another type of machinery you may see at or around the dairy farm is a self-propelled forage harvester, also known as a chopper. These machines are used for harvesting grains, typically corn, for cattle feed. Instead of separating the cob to process kernels, choppers process the entire stalk to create corn silage.

Crop Production

The majority of dairy farms are vertically integrated, which means they manage all steps of the lifecycle of their product. Since dairy cows need a large amount of nutritious feedstuffs, many operations grow their own crops. You’ve already learned about the chopper, but growing corn and other products takes several pieces of farm equipment from seed to harvest.

Row crop tractors, planters, tillage implements, and combine harvesters are pieces of equipment you can expect to see in the field.

Compact Construction Equipment

Although compact construction equipment is not technically farm equipment, many dairy operations utilize equipment like skid steers and compact loaders to move feed and manage waste. Compact loaders are often used to easily fill feed trucks for correct feed mixing.

It takes a lot of moving parts and machinery to keep a dairy operation running smoothly. Castongia Tractor is proud to serve dairy farmers in Northwest Indiana from our agricultural locations in Fowler, DeMotte, Rensselaer, and Valparaiso.
